A Sacred Call to Service
In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus tells his followers “Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world, for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.”
We at Parkway believe that our call to service is at the heart of our lives as Christians. We are a missional church, committed to living out Jesus’ example of servant leadership in all we do. Because of that commitment to God and one another, Parkway is actively involved in a number of ministries and initiatives in Jefferson and Orleans Parishes, including:
Program of Hope: A ministry developed out of First Presbyterian Church of New Orleans that serves homeless and people experiencing poverty. Program of Hope has provided essential resources for thousands of people in New Orleans by gathering donations of food, clothing, toiletries, and more for the people in our community who are most in need.
Okra Abbey: A food and urban farming ministry in the Pigeon Town neighborhood of New Orleans, Okra Abbey seeks to provide low-income and unhoused people with access to fresh food and fellowship, through community gardening programs, a weekly Wednesday meal, and opportunities to gather for coffee and friendly conversation.
The Labyrinth: The Labyrinth Cafe is a pay-what-you-can coffee shop and cafe located adjacent to Tulane and Loyola Universities. A mission of the United Methodist Church and the PC(USA), The Labyrinth seeks to provide local students with a safe, warm atmosphere to study, hang out, and engage with the world around them. Each Sunday, Labyrinth hosts a worship service and light supper, and relies on local congregations such as Parkway to provide meals and other resources.
